Determination of Silage Quality of Some Forage Crops and Mixtures by Different Methods

This study was conducted to determine the crude nutrient contents and quality characteristics of silages prepared from corn (Zea mays L.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and giant reed (Arundo donax L.) with pure and different mixture ratios. For this purpose, these plants were ensiled purely and at the rates of 25%, 50%, 75% respectively. Apart then, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), crude protein (CP), ether extract, dry matter (DM), soluble solids content, pH and acidity (%) measurements of the 24 different silage mixtures were calculated, also some physical observations and fleig scores were calculated. Moreover, fleig point was considered and there were statistically significant variations (P<0.01) between among all the characteristics. As a result of analysis the highest crude protein value was obtained from 75S*25K at 18,13 %, the highest NDF value was obtained from 69,21 % at 25S*75K, the highest ADF value obtained from 33MSK at 45,87 %. The best mixture were determined 50M*50S and 50S*50Y as a result of the physical analyses. The highest fleig points were obtained from the mixture 100M %, 100S %, 75M*25S, 50M*50S, 25M*75S, 75M*25Y, 75M*25K, 75M*25K, 75S*25K and 50S*50K. In conclusion, it was determined that the silage quality was increased when alfalfa was mixed with corn and sorghum that still commonly made silage. When giant reed (Arundo donax L.) entered the mixture, it has been found that it adversely affected to the silage, although it is rich in proteins and carbohydrates.
