Effect of different pre-sowing treatments on seed germination percentage and time of papaya cultivars (Carica papaya L.)

The study was conducted using 'Sunrise Solo', 'Red Lady', 'Tainung', 'SS-45', 'BH-65' and 'Sel-42' cultivars of Carica papaya (L.). The following pretreatment were treated respectively; (a ) control; (b) cutting the seed tips (1-2 mm); (c) soaking seeds in cool water (18±2°C) for 24 and 48 hours; (d) soaking seeds in hot water (40°C) for 10, 15 and 20 second; and (e) soaking the seeds in 250, 500, 750 and 1000 ppm GA3 solutions for 24 hours. Germination of the cultivars varied from 6.67% to 97.77% and germination time ranged from 7 to 14 days. Pretreatment with GA3 (250 and 1000 ppm) for 24 hours was the best treatment for germination percentages and germination time for 'Sunrise Solo', 'Red Lady' and 'Tainung', but optimum GA3 concentration varied with the cultivars. Pretreatment with soaking seeds in hot water (40°C) gave the best result for both seed germination percentages and germination times for 'SS-45', 'BH-65' and 'Sel-42' cultivars. Fast germination was produced with the GA3 treatments depending on concentration. 'Red Lady' seeds treated with 750 ppm GA3 for 24 hours had the highest germination percentage with 97.78%. 'Tainung' had the shortest germination time when treated with 500 ppm GA3 for 24 hours and germinated in 7 days. Overall we recommend pretreatments with GA3 for 'Sunrise Solo', 'Red Lady' and Tainung' and soaking seeds in hot water (40°C) for 'SS-45', 'BH-65' and 'Sel-42'.
