THE ADAPTATION OF SPATIAL ANXIETY SCALE INTO TURKISH: VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY STUDIES

This study aims to adapt the Spatial Anxiety Scale originally developed by Lyons et al. (2018) to Turkish culture and Turkish language and to estimate the psychometric properties. The study group comprised of 1169 undergraduate students in various undergraduate department/programs of two state universities. The original scale consists of 24 items under 3 factors (imagery, mental manupilation, and navigation). To check the language validity, translation studies were conducted, and the correlations between the data obtained from both English and Turkish forms of the scale were examined. As a result of the exploratory factor analysis conducted for construct validity, a construct consisting of 21 items under 3 factors was obtained. Confirmatory factor analysis results confirmed the three-factor construct. In addition, the calculated corrected item-total correlation coefficients, t-test analysis comparing the 27% lower/upper group scores provided evidence of structure validity. It was also determined that scale gives reliable results since the calculated corrected item-total, Cronbach alpha and Guttman split-half internal consistency coefficients and composite reliability coefficients were satisfactory. According to these values, it was concluded that the Turkish adaptation of the spatial anxiety scale yielded valid and reliable results.
