The Relationship Between Self-Efficacy, Anxiety and Depression in Middle School Students
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between academic, social, emotional and general self-efficacy levels and depression and anxiety levels in adolescents. This study also examined the age and gender differences among these variables. The research is in relational screening model. The study group consisted of 240 students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grade students of five secondary schools randomly assigned to the Ankara Directorate of National Education. “Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for Children” and “Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale-Child Version” were used in the study. The data were analyzed by using “T test for Independent Groups”, “The Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Analysis” and “One-Way Variance Analysis (ANOVA)”. As a result of the statistical analysis, it was found that academic, emotional and general self-efficacy levels decreased and social phobia, panic and depression levels increased as age increased. It was observed that academic and general self-efficacy, separation anxiety, obsession-compulsions and general anxiety were higher in girls than boys. As the academic self-efficacy decreased in adolescents, the symptoms of social phobia, panic, general anxiety and depression increased; social self-efficacy decreased in adolescents, the symptoms of seperation anxiety increased; social phobia, obsessive-compulsions, panic, general anxiety and depression increased as emotional self-efficacy decreased. Suggestions have been made in light of the findings.
