Gibbon, Edward. Son Peygamber Muhammed -Doğuşu, Karakteri ve Öğretisi-. çev. Meral Harzem. İstanbul: İndie Yay. 2020.

İngiliz tarihçi ve siyasetçi Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (Roma İmparatorluğu’nun Gerileyiş ve Çöküş Tarihi) isimli eseri ile ünlenmiştir. Avrupa merkezci tarih anlayışını aşan Gibbon eserinde Hz. Muhammed’in hayatına da yer vermiştir.

British historian and politician Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) is famous for his work titled The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Gibbon, who exceeded Eurocentrism, also included the life of the Prophet Muhammad in his work. This chapter has been translated into Turkish, published as a separate work, and has been added to the Turkish literature. Gibbon addressed the Prophet in the classical Orientalist style. In describing the life of the Prophet, he devoted titles and evaluated the subjects he considered important. In these assessments, it can be stated that he complied with considerable accuracy. However, at times there are also places where he cannot free himself from the influence of Christian theology. For this reason, the work is not a classical-chronological narrative, but there are also theological evaluations in the work. In the book, the pre-Islamic religious-political situation of the Arabian peninsula, the birth, growing, prophethood of the Prophet, the belief system he brought, his hijra and events after migration, and his death are contained in short brief considerations. In addition, the problem of power after the Prophet and the four caliphs are discussed. The book is worth reading. Because, from an orientalist point of view of 18th century Europe, the life of the Prophet and what happened after him is described in a relatively neutral style.
