Craftsman Scenes in the Quseyr Amra Palace Frescoes

The majority of the ornaments of the Qusayr Amra Palace are ornaments in the fresco technique. Dancers, musicians, and wrestlers constitute some of the scenes where human figures are abundant. In addition to these subjects, bath scenes and a large number of various decorative themes are encountered. These frescoes are thought to depict the activities and hobbies of the Umayyad princes. In this study, the depictions of artists and artisans in Qusayr Amra are discussed. The depictions in question are located on the eastern ceiling of the Reception Hall. The ceiling fresco decoration consists of thirty-two panels framed in four rows of eight equal squares. These frescoes depict different jobs related to construction work, such as carpentry, blacksmithing, stone cutting, and mortar preparation. In the study, the importance, ionic sources, and style of the frescoes were investigated in detail. The depiction of workers is a unique phenomenon in the history of early Islamic art and forms part of the themes found in Qusayr Amra. In the article, the different artisanal frescoes in Qusayr Amra were described and the relationship of these frescoes with the decorations in the other rooms of the palace was tried to be explained. These frescoes are generally praising the Caliph. This caliph is likely to be Walid bin Yazid.
