Investigating of the Number Perception and Nonroutine Problem Solving Skills of 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Students

The purposes of the study are to determine the number perception and nonroutine problem solving skills of students and to examine the possible relationship between these skills. The relational scanning model was used in the study. The study group consists of a total of 240 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from four primary schools in the Erzurum City Center in the 2009-2010 academic year. The simple random sampling model was used to determine the participant primary schools. The “Number Perception Test” and “Nonroutine Problem Solving Test” including problems requiring deduction, induction and spatial reasoning were used to gather data. In the analysis of the data gathered from the tests percentage and frequency values, One-Way ANOVA, independent t-test and correlation analysis were used. In the study, it is determined that these students levels of number perception and nonroutine problem solving skills are low and there is a positive relationship between these skills
