Investigation of the Effects of Computer Based Activities on Modeling Skills of Secondary School Students

In the science course, there are many abstract concepts that students have difficulty understanding. One of the tools that have been used for a long time to make these abstract and hard to understand concepts more understandable is models and modeling activities. In the production process of models, behaviors called modeling skills should be exhibited in individuals. This study aims to improve the modeling skills of 7th grade students with the help of computer-based activities. To that end, computer-based activities for the previously identified modeling skills were developed and the effects of these activities on the students' skills were examined. The data were collected through a rubric, field notes, and interviews with students. The obtained quantitative data were analyzed using a dependent-groups t-test. It was concluded that computer-based activities developed the modeling skills of secondary school students. To implement teaching with the model and the modeling process effectively, suggestions were made for the development of the modeling skills of students
