Use of blood and blood products in the management of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders: A systematic review
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are classified as extracapsular and intrcapsular originated. In this classification, myofascial pain, internal derangement, degenerative joint diseases, and neoplasias can be included. In the etiology of these disorders, trauma, infection, osteoarthritis, immunologic and metabolic diseases as well as pathological entities play role. In the management of TMJ disorders, conservative methods are commonly performed whereas surgical treatment is less preferred. In recent years, the use of patient’s blood and blood products are commonly used in regenerative therapy, and positive results are reported in the healing of both soft and hard tissues. In this systematic review, we aim to analyze the studies evaluating the effects of blood and blood products in the treatment of TMJ disorders.
