The comparison of apical microleakage of single-cone tapered gutta-percha canal filling technique with the other gutta-percha canal filling techniques using with four different canal sealers

Introduction: The aim of this study is to evaluate apical sealing of single-cone tapered gutta-percha technique with lateral condensation and Thermafil techniques using 4 different canal sealers by dye penetration and clearing methods comparatively.Materials and Methods: 200 single canal extracted mandibular premolars were used in this study. Root canal preparation of teeth was performed with ProTaper Ni-Ti instruments. 20 premolars were separated as negative and positive control groups. 180 teeth were divided into 3 main groups which consist of 60 teeth, and these groups were divided into 4 sub groups which consist of 15 teeth. Lateral condensation, Thermafil and single cone techniques were applied with 4 different root canal sealer. After filling all the root canals, dye leakage and clearing methods were applied to all groups and the amount of leakage was identified by using linear measurement method. ANOVA test were used for statistical analysis. Results: The maximum dye leakage was in the single cone technique 2.902 ± 2.041 mm, in lateral condensation 2.173 ± 1.477mm and the minimum value was 1.832 ± 1.009 mm in Thermafil technique. The difference between lateral condensation and Thermafil techniques was not statistically different but single cone technique was found significantly different. The minimum apical leakage value of all root canal sealers was found in groups which Diaket and Roekoseal were used, the maximum leakage was in Ketac-endo group. The unleakage of single cone root canal filling technique was not different than other techniques when Diaket and Reakoseal were used but the apical leakage was significantly higher when AH plus and Keta-endo were used. Conclusions: As a result, single cone root canal filling technique is insufficient when compared to lateral condensation and Thermafil techniques about apical leakage; but it can show a difference depend on the canal sealers that was used with and can provide similar unleakage like those two techniques.
