Treatment efficacy of oral appliance on severe obstructive sleep apnea: Case report

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is one of the common sleep disorders. It is characterized by repetetive cessation of respiration, owing to complete or partial collaps of the upper airway during sleep. The most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome are snoring, insomnia, anxiety and depression, headache, decreased sexual desire and carelessness. Oral appliances could be alternative treatment procedure to surgical treatment and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment for patients with obstructive sleep apnea. It has been reported that oral appliances are effective treatment option for mild-to moderate obstructive sleep apnea patients however, there is not much study about their effectiveness in severe obstructive sleep apnea. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of individually fabricated oral appliance in a severe obstructive sleep apnea patient by means of polysomnographic records.
