Halitosis: Relationship with periodontal diseases and treatment strategies
Halitosis is defined as an unpleasant odour originating from mouth during speaking or exhalation. Halitosis may be pathological or unpathological which leads to the formation of volatile compounds from an intra or extra oral source. According to a recent classification in 2014, 6 different types of halitosis have been defined. Although the prevelance of halitosis has been reported between 22- 50%, limited number of studies are available regarding the prevelance and treatment strategies. Therefore in this review, definition of halitosis, classification as well as the current treatment options have been disscussed.
