Dental Neglect
Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic diseases in childhood. Caries, periodontal diseases and other conditions that negatively affect oral health can cause pain, infection and loss of function if not treated. These undesirable consequences can negatively affect learning, communication, nutrition, and other activities necessary for normal growth and development. Failure to maintain oral health and to obtain required dental care is defined as dental neglect. Parents / caregivers’ deliberate failure to seek adequate knowledge and care in maintaining oral health has an important role in dental neglect but this situation should be separated from the lack of knowledge or awareness in determining the dental care needs of the child. Additionally, dental negligence is caused by dentist and other health personnel, who are obliged to have negligence awareness, raise awareness of the patient and parents and find necessary solutions if they do not fulfill their responsibilities. Understanding and analyzing the concept of dental neglect can help to understand the complex relationship between individual behaviors, environmental factors and dental diseases and addressing dental neglect primarily for future research can also reduce the likelihood of possible mouth problems. This review aims to understand all aspects of the concept of dental neglect and to create awareness in terms of both health care professionals and parents.
