COMPAREMENT OF CONTROL FOCUS AND PHYSICAL SELF-PERCEPTION WITH GENDER, TYPE OF SPORT AND SPORT EXPERIENCE OF ELITE ATHLETES

The purpose of this study was to compare locus of control and physical self-perception level of elite athletes with regard to gender, types of sport and sport experience and to determine the relationship between these two concepts. 207 male (M age = 19.11 ± 3.28) and 122 female athletes (M age = 18.50 ± 3.65) from individual and team sports were participated to this study. For assessing locus of control and physical self-perception level of athletes "Wingate Sport Achievement Responsibility Scale (WSARS)" and "Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP)" were administered to participants respectively. The results of 2 x 2 x 3 (Gender x Types of Sport x Sport Experience) univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated that there was a significant differences in locus of control with regard to gender (F(1,305) =10.77; p<.05), but there was no significant difference in LOC with regard to types of sport (F(1,305) =0.89; p>.05) and sport experience (F(2,305) =0.51; p>.05). 2 x 2 x 3 x 5 (Gender x Types of Sport x Sport Experience x Subscales of PSPP) multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) revealed significant overall sport experiences multivariate main effects on the subscales of physical selfperception (Hotelling's T2 = 0.12; F(10, 546) = 3.31; p<.01). Followed-up univariate analysis indicated that this main effect could be attributed to physical condition (F(2,278) = 10.59; p<.01) body attractiveness (F(2,278) = 7.56; p<.01) strength (F(2,278) = 3.14; p<.01) and global physical self-worth (F(2,278) = 3.39; p<.01) subscales of PSPP.To determine the relationship between physical self-perception and locus of control, Pearson Product moment correlation was conducted. According to Pearson Product Moment Correlation analysis there was a positive, significant; but weak relationship between locus of control and two subscales of PSPP -physical condition and strength- (r=0.16; p<0.01 and r=0.19; p<.0.01 respectively). In addition, the results of partial correlation analysis by controlling gender, types of sport and sport experience showed that there was a significant relation between locus of control and the same subscales of PSPP -physical condition and strength- (r = 0.15; p<0.01 and r = 0.13; p<0.05 respectively). The results of this study indicated that there was a significant difference in locus of control between female and male athletes and female athletes had more internal control than male athletes. Additionally, sport experience has an effect on physical self-perception. Besides, a significant and positive relationship was obtained between locus of control and strength and physical condition subscales of physical perception.
