Reflections of Love, Nakedness and Eroticism in Terracotta Artwork of the Ancient World

Human figures on artwork of the ancient world which are depicted nude, engaging in love making and erotic-pornographic activities have been subject to religious and ethical research. Among these themes which even nowadays are handled with some reserve, the figure of Eros, god of love, has been embraced by most people and various nations. None of the ancient gods has, in the course of time, undergone as much modification as Eros had and no one has inspired poets as strongly as he did. The most innocent reflection of physical love is seen in hugging, cuddling female and male figures which are usually dressed. This contribution deals with a limited selection of terracotta examples from the ancient Greek times to the Byzantine period which, occasionally depict erotic themes of physical and symbolic nature
