During the World War I, capturd Tatar soldiers serving inRussian Army were placed in Kenyérmező and Eger (Cheb) prisonercamps located within the lands of Australia Hungarian Empire. Theestablishment of these prisoner camps, was an opportunity to conductanthropologic, linguistic and folkloric studies for scientists. TheHungarian Turan Association, which aims to investigate the kinshipbetween oriental nations and Hungarians and to tighten relations,cooperated with Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Thus, a number ofscientists were sent to these camps.Hungarian Turcologist Ignác Kúnos was one of them. He visitedthe camps between in 1915-1918 and collected folkloric data. Then hereported his observations to Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In theperson of Kúnos who was a witness to the prison camps, Turcologyworks that are conducted behind the lines shows that the prisoner campsserved the function of a school for Hungarian scholars. In addition, itemphasize the importance of Hungarian Turkology, not only in terms ofTurcology, but also in terms of other disciplines.In this study, Kúnos’ visits to and activities in the prisoner camps andhis life in those are revealed in light of formal correspondences found inHungarian Academy of Science Archive and in Hungarian EthnographyMuseum Ethnology Archive, Kúnos personal correspondences, reportshe presented to Hungarian Academy of Sciences, volumes of TuranJournal and some other documents and they are evaluated in terms of Hungarian Turcology and importance of the prisoner camps in theWorld War I.
