Turkish Adaptation of Behavioral Inhibition System / Behavioral Activation System Scales (BIS/BAS Scales): Validity and Reliability Studies

According to the Reinforcement SensitivityTheory (Gray, 1987, 1990), there are two ba-sic motivational systems which are sensitive tosignals of reward (Behavioral Activation Sys-tem-BAS) and punishment (BehavioralInhibition System-BIS). One of the mostcommonly used instrument for evaluatingthese two systems is BIS/BAS Scales (Carverand White, 1994). The purpose of this study isto determine the validity and reliability of theTurkish version of the BIS/ BAS Scales. TheTurkish scale was administered to 371 collegeundergraduates. In order to de- termine thevalidity of the scale; exploratory factoranalysis was conducted using principalcomponents analysis, inter-correlations amongthe subscales were examined with Pearson cor-relation analysis, Sensation Seeking Scale-Vand I-7 Impulsiveness Questionnaire were alsoadministered to 89 subjects for convergent va-lidity. For the reliability study, Cronbach’s alphacoefficients and test-retest reliability values werecalculated. Factor analysis indicated that thesame 4-factor structure (behavioral inhibition, fun seeking, reward responsiveness and drive).Alpha and reliability values were significantand the expected correlations were determinedamong the similar subscales of the three scales. These results suggested that the Turkish BIS/BASScales is a valid and reliable measure.
