Vascular Access Management 1: An Overview

Vascular access for renal replacement therapy (RRT) isseen as one of the most challenging areas confronting thenephrology multidisciplinary team. The vascular access ofchoice is the arterio-venous fistula (AVF) followed by thearterio-venous graft (AVG) and central venous catheter(CVC). A successful vascular access programme requiresforward planning ensuring that enough time is available forthe preservation of the access site, its creation and maturation.Successful cannulation of the vascular access requireson the part of the nephrology nurse, clinical expertise andknowledge on the management of different types of vascularaccess including different cannulation techniques.
