Market Efficiency and Istanbul Stock Exchange: An Econometrical Analysis of Weak-Form Efficiency

(Market Efficiency and Istanbul Stock Exchange: An Econometrical Analysis of Weak-Form Efficiency) In this article, it is investigated if Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) is efficient at weak-form level. For the period of August 1st, 1994 – July 31st, 2005, the returns on four indices (ISE 30, ISE 100, ISE Financial and ISE Industrial) and 10 stocks included in ISE 30 index were used in a single factor regression analysis and in a multi factors regression analysis for the testing purposes. The empirical results found are mixed. The results indicate that in the long run there is a statistically meaningful positive relationship between past and present stock prices. However, in the short run, the empirical results indicate that the degree of relationship decreases or disappears when more recent data are used. This shows that ISE is efficient at weak-form level in some certain periods and for some certain stocks. Besides, due to the fact that the degree of positive relationship found in the analysis where daily and weekly data were used, is not sufficient to cover commissions paid for trading activities, it is thought that the market is efficient at weak-form level.
