Antik Hellen polis'inin bizatihi siyasi varlığı, çağdaş devlete "bağımsızlık ve otonomi" kavramlarını miras bırakmıştır. Bu kavramların eleutheria (bağımsızlık) ve autonomia (otonomi) olarak antik Hellen dilinde ortaya çıkışları ve ardından devletler arası ilişkilerin şekillendiği Klasik Dönem yazınındaki kullanımları, polis’lerin siyasi statüsüne ışık tutar. Bu çalışmanın amacı; Thukydides’in eserine dayanarak Hellen polis’lerinin Klasik Dönem’deki siyasi statüsüne ilişkin durumu ortaya koyabilmektir. Çalışma; Hellen polis’inin ortaya çıkışı itibariyle siyasi statüsünün belirlenmesi, Hellenlerin önde gelen diğer siyasi örgütlenme biçimlerinin anlaşılması ve devletler arası siyasi ilişkilerin gelişimi açısından Klasik Dönem öncesine ilişkin kısa bir siyasi tarih özeti ile başlayacaktır. Böyle bir giriş ile konuya alt yapı sağlamak amaçlanmaktadır. Ardından eleutheria ve autonomia kavramlarının antik yazında ortaya çıkışları ele alınacak ve Thukydides’in eserinin konu açısından irdelenmesine geçilecektir. Thukydides’in aktarımları, yer yer yazıtlardan gelen bilgilerle açıklanacak, ardından Ksenophon’un Hellenika adlı eserinden alıntılarla desteklenecektir.

The political existence of the ancient Greek polis left the concepts of “independence and autonomy” as a legacy to the modern state. The emergence of these concepts in the ancient Greek language as eleutheria (independence) and autonomia (autonomy), and then their use in the literature of the Classical period, in which inter-state relations were shaped, shed light on the political status of the poleis. The purpose of this study is to represent the political status of the Greek poleis in the Classical period based on Thucydides' work. In this context, the study will begin with a brief overview of the political history of the pre-Classical period in terms of determining the political status of the Greek polis during its emergence process, understanding of the Greekpolitical organizations other than polis and development of inter-state political relations. With such an introduction, it is aimed to provide a substructure about the subject. Then the emergence of the concepts of eleutheria and autonomia in the ancient literature will be referred and Thukydides' work will be examined in terms of the subject. Thucydides’ references will be explained with information from the inscriptions when needed, then will be supported by the quotations from Xenophon's Hellenika
