Stoic Allegory: Heracles and His Labours

The fact that a text conceals what it says through allegories, symbols or metaphors, or it wants to say something else than it already does indicates that the truth cannot be understood or conveyed directly. There are many examples in the history of hermeneutics, which emphasize the superiority of allegorical exegesis and do not condemn it to literal. Stoics are undoubtedly one of the most important of these examples since they adopt allegories as a tool and allegorical exegesis as a method. Stoics, who have an important position in the history of hermeneutics with their approach to allegories and their usage of allegorical exegesis as a method, think that allegories used in ancient texts are beyond what they say and the poet and philosopher are not very different from each other. Stoics, who aim to both justify their philosophical theories with their comments on myths and eliminate criticism on tradition through these theories, also transform traditional images. How the allegories are used as a philosophical tool, to what extent they are used, what is aimed with allegorical interpretation, and how traditional images can be transformed are the issues that Stoics take into consideration. Based on the premise that allegorical exegesis is a unique method that responds to many problems, this article discusses the allegorical exegesis of Stoics through the transformation of a traditional image and tries to justify the threefold function of allegory. For this purpose, examples of Stoic allegorical exegesis of Heracles, the unique hero of myths, tragedies and comedies, are dealt with in relation to the function, meaning and scope of allegory. This study first examines how Heracles was interpreted in pre-Stoic myths, tragedies and philosophical texts, and then discusses how Stoics interpreted Heracles' multiple personality philosophically through symbols and metaphors and how they transformed this image.
