Tarih araştırmalarının hedeflerinden birisi de kaynakların ele alınan olayı tanımlamak için kullandıkları kelimeleri ve buna yükledikleri sosyolojik ve psikolojik anlamı çözümlemeye çalışmaktır. Bu çalışmanın amacı Osmanlı kaynaklarında göç ile ilgili kullanılan kelimeleri tespit etmektir. Osmanlı devlet adamları Osmanlı coğrafyasında meydana gelen nüfus göçlerini sebebine ve yönüne göre muhacir, ev göçü, firari, mülteci gibi farklı kelimelerle tanımlamıştır.

One of the aims of conducting history studies is to examine the words that the historical sources use to describe a certain historical event and to analyze the sociological and psychological meanings that the sources attribute to the respective events. The purpose of this study in this context is to identify the terms related to the concept of immigration in the Ottoman sources. The Ottoman bureaucracy used the terms of immigrant, immigration of a household, escapee and refugee in order to describe the population movements depending on the causes and directions of immigration.
