THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE COMPOSITE INDEX AND INDUSTRIAL STOCK INDEXES

The relationship between macroeconomy and stock markets has been examined by a number of studies in the literature. Due to high correlation coefficients between various macroeconomic variables statistical models are subject to the collinearity problem. Furthermore, in the literature the focus is on the aggregate stock market, but the impact of macroeconomic shocks on industrial indexes is not investigated. This study examines the impact of changes in the composite index published by the CBRT on the financial performances of the industrial stock indexes. In the long run equilibrium, the positive and statistically significant impact of macroeconomic improvements is observed on all sector indexes, except for those of services and defense industries. It is found that short run shocks in the composite index have positive impact on all indexes, but the impact dies off within a year.
