EFFECTS OF TEACHER AND LEARNER CENTERED INSTRUCTION AND THE FOLLOWING PRACTICE TEACHING ON THE VALUE PRIORITIES OF PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of teacher and learner centered teaching methods course instruction and the following teaching practice on the value orientations of prospective physical education teachers. To achieve this goal, 32 senior physical education prospective teachers were randomly assigned into a teacher-centered and a learner-centered group prior to teaching methods course. In the teaching methods course, teacher centered group was taught by lecturing, teacher-initiated questioning and homeworks, while the learner centered group was taught by class discussion, group works, field observations and projects for 12 weeks. Following the course, all subjects participated in a 12-week practice teaching program. For data collection, the Value Orientation Inventory (VOI, Ennis and Chen, 1993) was applied before and after the teaching methods course and at the end of practice teaching. VOI consists of 5 subscales namely; disciplinary mastery, learning process, self actualization, ecological integration and social responsibility. Repeated measures ANOVA was used for the statistical analysis. Results indicated that there was no significant difference in value priorities between the teacher centered and learner centered groups’ after the teaching methods course and practice teaching (p>0.05). However, learner centered group revealed a trend toward strengtening learning process priority at the end of teaching methods course compared to the teacher centered group. This priority by learner centered group decreased to the level before the teaching methods course at the end of practice teaching, and groups became alike. Strengtened learning process value priority at the end of the teaching methods course shows that learner centered instruction increases critical thinking, learning to learn and problem solving of physical education students as a value priority. However, the context in practice teaching decreases this priority.
