THE EFFECT OF SHORT TERM L-CARNITIN SUPPLEMENTATION UPON THE GLUCOSE LEVEL DURING A SOCCER MATCH

The aim of this study was to examine L- carnitine intake affecting the glucose level during a football match. For this study, 22 healthy soccer players who are candidates for professional joined as a placebo group. Their height average is 178±6.64 cm, body weight average is 70±5.12 kg, age average is 19.18±0.87 years and sports age average is 9.64±2.29 years. Subjects were issued that will be doing a football match two halveswith 45 minutes each. The subjects in the first group were each given 2 gr carnitine of inside 200 ml water. One hour before the match started, and only 200 ml water to placebo group. Subjects weren’t informed about having been given carnitine or water. The blood draw was performed in four phases indicated below, by health officials in 10 ml injectors through antlcubital vein. First blood draw was performed one hour before the match, second blood draw was performed at the start of the match (one hour after the taking of the substance), third blood draw was performed in the half time, and fourth was done at the end of the match. The data were evaluated with SPSS 10.0 doing a variance analysis (Repeated measurement ANOVA) in successive measurements to find out whether there were significant differences between them. There Bonferroni test was applied to determine the measurement causing this difference. There were no statistically significant differences in placebo group between the measurements as regards to glucose variable. Carnitin group on the other hand displayed statistically significant differences between the measurements (P<0.05). In conclusion, beginning from the start of the match, there was a certain increase in the glucose value in the blood and this increase went on until the end of the first half. From the end of the first half to the end of the match, the increase was kept intact. It is thought that the glucose level which got an increase at the end of the first half didn’t get further increases until the end of the match, and carnitin intake secured the glucose level in the soccer players after 30-40 minutes of exercise.
