Giambattista Vico’nun 1668-1744 ilk özgün felsefe eseri On the Study Methods of Our Time “Çağımızın Araştırma Yöntemleri Üzerine” adlı eseridir ve bu çalışmasında antikçağ ile modern çağ arasındaki yönteme dair çekişmeleri ele alırken, hümanist eğitimin doğasına ilişkin göz ardı edilemeyecek felsefi argümanlar geliştirir. Hepsinden öte, bu kitapta Vico hümanizma karşısında bilimcilik scientism versus humanism tartışmasına can alıcı bir katkı sağlayacak şekilde klasik ve modern kültürün meziyetlerini karşılaştırarak, Kartezyen dünya görüşünün bir sonucu olan bilginin bölümlere ayrılmasını hatta parçalanmasını şiddetle eleştirir ve yadsır. Kartezyen kuru mantığın karşısına hümanistik gelenekle çıkan Vico, hafıza ve imgelemin değerini teslim eden kapsayıcı hümanist bir bilim ve eğitim anlayışına duyulan gereksinimi apaçık gözler önüne serer. İşte Kartezyen felsefeyle hesaplaşan Vico’nun çok önemli ve ihmal edilen ya da çok bilinmeyen bir yanı da bilim ve eğitim konusundaki görüşleridir. Bu çalışmada Vico’nun bilim ve eğitim konusundaki görüşleri gözler önüne serilmeye çalışılacak ve günümüzde karşılaştığımız eğitim meselelerine Vico’nun felsefi görüşleri ışığında bakılacak ve çözüm önerileri getirilecektir.

Giambattista Vico’s 1668-1744 first original philosophical work is titled as On the Study Methods of Our Time in which he develops crucial philosophical arguments regarding the nature of humanistic education as well as the conflicts on method between ancient and modern era. Above all, Vico, in this book, compares the merits of classical and modern cultures with each other in order to contribute essentially to argument on scientism versus humanism and he criticizes and rejects the fragmentations and divisions of knowledge resulted from Cartesian world view. Vico, who stands up with humanistic tradition against Cartesian crude logic, spells out the needed conception of humanistic science and education stressed both memory and education. Hence, Vico’s ideas on science and education are either unknown or ignored in his general philosophy. This paper is interested in setting forth Vico’s thoughts on science, education and history as well as offering solutions to the educational problems that we face today in the light of Vico’s philosophical ideas.
