CONCERTMASTER’S DUTIES IN RELATION TO THE VIOLIN SOLOS IN RIMKSY-KORSAKOV’S SCHEHERAZADE

A concertmaster, as the musician that comes second to the conductor in an orchestra, hasa very important role in the functioning and the success of that orchestra. The number ofprinted academic resources about concertmastership in our country is quite scarce. Theaim of this article is to provide a useful resource for performers on concertmastership dutyand in relation, the violin solos in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade Symphonic Suite.Literature review on this subject included the detailed examination of the articles, booksand written sources on the internet. The history of concertmastership and the duties of theconcertmaster were discussed; information on Rimsky-Korsakov’s life and ScheherazadeSymphonic Suite were given. Ideas and suggestions on fingering, bow selection andmusical expression were presented on the violin solos of Scheherazade, which is oneof the most important works for a concertmaster within the orchestral repertoire. As aresult of this study, concertmaster’s duties, as playing the violin solos in the work to beperformed, conveying the musical ideas of the conductor to the orchestra, writing thefingerings and the bows for the string sections and coordinating the working arrangementof the orchestra were determined. The performance of the violin solos, which is one of themost important of these duties, requires great mastery on the instrument and the work tobe performed. Trying out various alternatives for the performance of the Scheherazadeviolin solos will help a concertmaster reach the desired sonority.
