SEBASTEIA'NIN KIRK ŞEHİDİ

Öz M.Ö. 63 yılında imparator Pompeius tarafından bir kent olarak kurulan Sebasteia (Sivas)’da, Roma döneminde yaşanılan önemli olaylardan birisi de kırk Romalı Hristiyan askerin inançları uğruna şehit edilmesidir. İmparator Constantinus zamanında Milano Kararnamesi (M.S. 313) ile Hristiyanlara inançlarını yaşamalarında özgürlük tanınmıştır. Buna rağmen, Constantinus ile yönetimi paylaşan ve her zaman bir paganist olarak kalan Licinius tarafından her fırsatta Hristiyanlara büyük eziyetler edilmiştir. M.S. 320 yılında kırk inançlı asker, Licinius’un emri ile Sebasteia’da önce hapse atılmış, ardından şiddetli soğuğun yaşandığı kış mevsiminde donmuş bir gölün kıyısında ölüm acılarına son verene kadar beklemeye zorlanmıştır. Hristiyanlık dünyasının evrensel şehitleri olarak kabul edilen bu kırk asker onuruna olayın yaşanmasından 53 yıl sonra Caesarea (Kayseri) piskoposu Aziz Basil tarafından kült düzenlenerek, tapınaklar yaptırılmıştır. Basil’in ardından kült Kapadokya bölgesinden hızla doğu ve batıya yayılmış ve kutsal mekânların duvarlarında popüler bir tema olarak uzun yıllar boyunca kullanılmıştır. Bu çalışmada Hristiyanlık dünyasında hala büyük saygı duyulan Sebasteia’nın Kırk Şehidi menkıbesinin geçtiği kaynaklar, kutsal şehitlerin kültünün yayıldığı coğrafya ve kültün sanattaki yansımaları ele alınmıştır.
