Fritz Thyssen Stiftung Vakfının sponsorluğunda, 5 Kasım 2013 günü İzmir’de Prof. Dr. Gerd Krumeich tarafından bir konferans verildi. Konferansın başlığı “Ulusal Perspektiflerin Ötesinde Harb-ı Umumi” idi. “Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Atatürk İlkeleri ve İnkılâp Tarihi Enstitüsü” ile “Orient-Institut İstanbul” arasında ortak etkinlik biçiminde gerçekleştirilen bu konferans İzmir’de Sabancı Kültür Sarayı’nda, “Yüzbaşı Şerafettin Salonu”nda yapıldı. Bu konferans, ilgili vakfın sponsorluğunda sonradan yapılacak bir dizi konferansın ilkini oluşturuyordu. Prof. Dr. Krumeich bu konferansında; Birinci Dünya Savaşı’nı üç ayrı aşamada ele aldı. Birinci aşama, Avrupa’daki devletlerin ve kamuoyunun yaklaşan savaşa karşı beklentileri idi. Çok kişi savaşın kısa sürede biteceğini sanıyordu. Ancak savaş beklenenden çok daha uzun sürdü. Bu savaş sonunda pek çok ülke, nüfuslarının önemli bir kısmını silâhaltına aldılar. Çok sayıda insan bu savaşta yaşamını yitirdi. Ancak savaştan en çok etkilenen sivil insanlardı. Bunun yanı sıra savaşta başta savaş ekonomisi olmak üzere, pek çok alanda yeni gelişmeler görüldü. Örneğin savaşta yeni savaş aletleri kullanıldı. Bu savaşın sonunda kentler yerle bir oldu. Ancak savaş sonunda yapılan barış antlaşmaları, savaşa katılan devletler için uygun bir sonuç yaratmadı. Bu kez ülkeler, çözülmemiş ve ağırlaşmış sorunların etkisiyle savaştan sonraki döneme çok daha fazla beklentilerle girdiler. Bu dönem, pek çok ülkenin, yitirdiklerini yeniden elde etmeleri için beklentiye geçtikleri bir dönem oldu…

A conference, which was sponsored by Fritz Thyssen Stiftung was given by Prof. Dr. Gerd Krumeich on 5th November 2013 in Izmir. The subject of the conference was “The Great War Beyond National Perspectives”. This conference which was realized as a joint activity between Dokuz Eylul University Principles of Ataturk and Revolution History Institute and Orient-Institut Istanbul, was carried out in Sabancı Culture Palace, in Yuzbasi Serafettin Hall. This conference composed the first of a series of conferences, which will be held under the sponsorship of related the Thyssen Foundation. Prof.Dr. Krumeich discussed the Great War in three different stages. The first stage was the expectation of states and public opinion in Europe against forthcoming war. A lot of people thought that the war would end soon. But the war lasted much more longer than expected. At the end of this war, many countries mobilized most of their population. Many people lost their lives in this war. However, the most affected from the war were civilians. In addition to that new developments were seen in many different fields foremost war economy. For instance, new war tools were used in the war. At the end of this war, cities were razed. However, peace treaties which were carried out at the end of the war, did not create a necessary result for countries which joined the war. This time, countries entered post-war period with much more expectations by the impact of aggravated and unresolved issues. This period was the period that many countries expected to regain what they lost
