This study and project bring a new system to the Soma mine of Western lignites of Turkey. The seam is 17 m thick, dipping 15°, susceptible to spontaneous combustion. The present mining system is horizontal slicing with caved logwalls resulting in loss of reserves and causing many mine fires. The projet proposes inclined pneumatically stowed longwall faces with reinforced concrete artificial roof. The stresses are evaluated and found to be 9 T/m1 and a reinforced concrete roof was designed for this stress The artificial roof is 80 cm thick having 6 mm diameter steel bars spaced »t 17.5 and 11 cm parallel and perpendicular to the face respectively. The project of application is given using this system. As stowing meterials and aggravates for the concrete, the marl obtained from the stripping operation of nearby Elmalı Open Pit is crushed and screened down to - 80 mm. For the concrete 225 kg/m3 Portland cement and 75 kg/m3 flying ash of the thermic power station are used. The cost of the new system at pithead is 74 Turkish Liras (1 US$ = 14 Liras) including amortization and interest charges of 24 million Lira equipment. It is calculated to cots 19 Liras more than the actual cost at the pithead. This will be justified by eliminating the loss of reserves, preventing fires and enabling to mine big pillars left to the main entries just above the seam.
