2006-2007 öğretim yılında gerçekleştirilen çalışmada, örneklem olarak (her sınıftan 20 kişi) rasgele seçimle belirlenen 80 Atatürk Üniversitesi Kazım Karabekir Eğitim Fakültesi Kimya Öğretmenliği öğrencisi alınmıştır. Öğrencilere geçerliliği ve güvenirliği sağlanmış “madde, atom ve periyodik cetvel” konularıyla ilgili kısa cevaplı, doğru yanlış ve çoktan seçmeli sorular içeren başarı testi uygulanmıştır. Ayrıca her sınıftan iki öğrenci ile dikkate alınan konularla ilgili öğrencilerin görüş ve tutumlarını ortaya koymayı amaçlayan yarı yapılandırılmış mülakatlar yapılmıştır. Testten elde edilen verilerin analizinden öğrencilerin konular hakkındaki anlama düzeylerinin birinci sınıftan sonra düştüğü, üçüncü ve dördüncü sınıflarda herhangi bir değişiklik göstermediği tespit edilmiştir. Mülakatların analizinden elde edilen sonuçlar testle elde edilen bulguları desteklemektedir. Çalışmanın bulguları öğrencilerde anlamlı öğrenmenin gerçekleşmediği düşüncesini destekler nitelikte olup elde edilen sonuçlar anlamlı öğrenme bağlamında tartışılmıştır.

The Change of Chemistry Teacher Candidates’ Understanding levels of Some Chemistry Topics in Terms of the Grade Level

This study aimed at identifying whether or not there is a difference between prospective chemistry teachers’(from 1st to 4th grade) understandings of “matter, the structure of atom and periodic table”. In the study carried out in 2006-2007 semester, the sample consisted of totally 80 chemistry undergraduates selected randomly (20 persons from each grade), in Kazım Karabekir Education Faculty in Ataturk University. The test which was validated and tested its reliability by the researchers, including the questions with short answer, true-false and multiple choose about “matter, the structure of atom, periodic table” topics was administered the sample. In addition, researchers interviewed with randomly selected two students from each grade to reveal the undergraduates’ views and attitudes of the introductory chemistry topics involved in the study. The findings from the analysis of the data indicated that the levels of undergraduates’ understandings differentiate according to their grades: it is the highest in first grade, and there are no any difference among the achievement levels of the second, the third and the fourth grades. Moreover, the findings from the analysis of the interview data supports those obtained from the achievement test. The results of the study confirm the thought that the students in the study have not acquired meaningful learning in the topics included in the study. Finally, in last section the findings were discussed in context of meaningful learning
