Active Learning Application of Geography Teaching A Simple of Air Pollution

The Problem: In a world in which knowledge and technology develop rapidly, the necessity of scrutinizing education strategies, making them keep pace with the changing time and their being able to see to the needs of the day is accepted by everyone. With the development of the democracy in the society, it is seen that the quality of education both in the matter of teacher and student and in the matter of education method, strategy and techniques has changed a lot. The education of geography has always been discussed in the light of these changes and the idea that the lessons are taught just theoretically has begun to spread. But according to the studies, the style of presenting geography to student’s shows that students face with a learning style that changes between understanding and interpretation of the lessons and concepts. This study demonstrates the difference of academic success between the students that were taught geography with active learning and the students that were taught with traditional teaching methods. Purpose of the study: The aim of this research is to show the difference between the levels of understanding and interpretation of the students who were taught with the Active Learning Approach, which requires students to consider the topic they should learn important and be active in the process of learning and students who were taught geography with the traditional methods, also known as teacher-centered. Methodology: In the study, the senior class students of Necatibey Education Faculty, Primary Education Department, Social Science Teaching department were investigated. Branch A was chosen as experiment group and Branch B was chosen as control group. There was not a meaningful difference between the academic successes of the groups. The topic of Air Pollution, which is the matter of Geography of Environmental Problems, was taught to the experiment group with Active Learning Methods and it was taught to the control group with traditional teaching methods. Finally, the students were subjected to a multiple choice question test consisting of eight questions. Findings and Results: After the students were taught with the methods of Active Learning and traditional teaching methods, the answers of the students to the multiple choice question test consisting of eight questions including the topics of air pollution, acid rain, ozone layer, the effect of greenhouse and the effects of air pollution on environment and people were evaluated. As a result, it was found that though there was a meaningful difference among them, the academic success of students of Branch who were taught with Active Learning methods was higher than the students of Branch B who were taught with traditional methods. Recommendations: The findings of the study shows that the answer of the question “how should the geography teaching be?” should be “by making the students be a part of the topic and by making them take an active part in the lesson.” Also, this result supports the results of the studies that were done before. Finally, it is suggested that in all the universities that gives geography lessons, the active learning strategies should certainly be adopted in geography teaching
