Prevalence and Determinants of Non-prescribed Medicine Use in Turkey

The main objective of this study is to analyse the prevalence and socio-economic and demographic determinants of non-prescribed medicine use in Turkey for the 2008-2016 period using “Health Survey” micro data sets obtained from Turkish Statistical Institute. For his purpose, the data is analysed using a logistic regression method. Findings of the study indicates women; individuals between the ages of 25 and 44; who live in rural area; with low income and good health status have higher probability of using non-prescribed medicine. Results also indicate that non-prescribed medicine use can be significantly linked to socio-economic factors and, hence, can yield important conclusions to policy makers. Further, since the study period covers the “Rational Drug Use” policy in Tukey, the effects of such policy is also analysed and discussed. This study is the first to analyse the prevalence and determinants of non-prescribed medicine use in Turkey with a nationally representative data. In this manner, this study is an important contribution to the literature. Further, this study provides important policy implications for the policy makers as well.
