RETHINKING THE SCOPE OF ORGANIZATION THEORY: BEING FELLOW COUNTRYMEN AND FELLOW COUNTRYMEN ASSOCIATIONS IN TURKEY

Similar to the other fields in social sciences, the ongoing discussions on philosophy of social sciences during 20th century have resulted for the dominant perspectives in organization theory literature to be argued. Especially, the diversity in the literature and the lack of academic unity starting with the end of 1970's, have led the flourish of discussions on the scope of organization theory itself. In this study, the scope of organization theory literature has been analyzed with the basis of Critical Theory and Postmodern Thought; and dominant paradigms in the literature and its perspective on organizations have been criticized. Therefore, this study aims to focus on the organizing activity of human and the natural organizational forms resulting from this activity in the context of Turkey, in contrast to the dominant paradigm in the literature and its view to the organizations by generally concentrate on the economic organizations and their functioning. Until the industrialization period starting with 1950's in Turkey, the vast majority of society had been living in the countryside areas, been involved in countryside living patterns and developed face-to-face relationship forms. By putting in to consideration of instant migration of vast majority to urban areas by not preparing the physical and social infrastructure, it had been inescapable that rural practices of organizing and communicating forms had affected and changed the existing organizational forms in the cities and created new forms of organizations. This study has discussed the impact of the migration from rural to urban areas over the organizing practices and organizational forms in urban life in Turkey. Within this context, the study has asserted that it is impossible to understand the organizations, both profit-oriented and nonprofit-oriented, without looking at the rural patterns and the social changes occurred during the process of migration in Turkey.
