HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR STUDENTS’ USE OF INTERNET TECHNOLOGIES AND THEIR ATTITUDES TOWARDS THE INTERNET

The present study aimed at determining high school senior students use of the Internet as well as their attitudes towards the Internet and investigating the influence of their demographic characteristics on their internet use and on their attitudes towards the internet. For this purpose, a scale including three sub-dimensions developed by Luan, Fung, Nawawi and Hong (2005) was used. The scale was applied to 423 senior students (233 male and 190 female) from high schools in the central town of the city of Diyarbakir. The analysis of the data collected revealed that students experienced in Internet use had more positive attitudes towards the Internet. It was also found out that both female and male students participating in the study rarely used the Internet and that there was no significant difference in their Internet attitudes with respect to their gender. It was also revealed that of all the students, 76,6% of them did not send any messages to their parents previously; that 69,7% of them did not ever participate in discussions in the Internet environment; and that 42,3% of them never read any newspapers or magazines via the Internet. Lastly, it was seen that among the participants, 54,4% of them thought they could themselves learn how to use the Internet while 75,7% of them stated they would never hesitate to use the Internet despite their lack of knowledge about Internet use.
