Bu kural ve davranışlar yazılı olmasa dahi toplumdaki her fert tarafından bilinir ve uyanlar takdir edilirken uymayanlar da yaptıkları suçun derecesine göre cezalandırılırlar. Sosyal normların amacı daha çok, çeşitli yöntemleriyle bireyi kötü, olumsuz veya uyumsuz davranışlardan uzaklaştırarak, toplum içerisinde yasalara uygun davranış biçimine uymaya zorlamaktadır. Bu yönüyle sosyal normlar din ile paralellik göstermektedir. Toplum içerisindeki insan davranışlarını düzenleyen ve denetleyen sosyal normları yaptırım gücüne göre; moda, teamül, görenek, âdet, gelenek, örf ve töre şeklinde sıralamak mümkündür.
