Determination of Arsenic (As) Concentrations in Drinking Water Sources of Antalya Province (Turkey)

This study was carried out to determine the arsenic concentrations of water samples taken from Duraliler 1, Duraliler 2, Boğaçay, Yeniköy warehouse and Yeşilbayır depot stations which are used as drinking water source in Antalya between June 2013 and May 2014. Analyses were performed using EPA 200.8 method and ICP-MS instrument, and the results were evaluated monthly and seasonally. The results of the current study indicated that the highest arsenic level (13.01 µgL-1 ) was observed in Yeniköy water warehouse station in February whereas the lowest arsenic concentration (0.07 µgL-1 ) was determined in June at Boğaçay station. In the seasonal averages, the lowest As content between 0.08-0.97 µgL-1 was determined in Boğaçay station and the highest As content between 8.30-11.40 µgL-1 was determined in Yeniköy station. Seasonal average of the other stations were; Duraliler 1 station between 2.58 to 3.97 µgL-1 , Duraliler 2 station between 3.62 to 4.62 µgL-1 and Yeşilbayır water warehouse between 8.30 to 10.04 µgL-1 . The results of the study showed that Yeşilbayır and Yeniköy stations had higher content of As than the limit value <10 μgL -1 stated in Regulation Concerning Water Intended for Human Consumption. This could be fact that the pollution of As in the water sources is caused not only from the geological structure but also the use of As containing pesticides and herbicides in intensive farming which leaches into groundwater and reaches water sources. The areas containing high As content should be encouraged to transition to organic farming, and in case of the cumulative increase of As content, establishment of As treatment facility can also be considered. However, the first goal should be to take protection measures in the recharge basins of the sources.
